Greening the Planet One SMB at a Time (and saving $ too!)
When we started Spiceworks four years ago our goal was simple but audacious: simplify IT for the world’s 5 million SMB IT pros, the heroes who keep the world’s accounting firms, manufacturers, schools, churches, car dealerships, hotels, and so much more running smoothly. When we interviewed them they wanted software to make managing their networks simpler — not one asked for software to make their business ‘greener’.
Could We Do Something “Green”?
Over the next couple of years on my trips to Europe, people such as James Governor at RedMonk started to ask me if we could include features in Spiceworks to help manage the power consumption and the resulting utility bill and carbon footprint for the world’s SMBs. Subsequently, SpiceHeads started asking the same thing. Some needed to show their boss how they were saving money whereas others needed to show their boss how they were running a “Green IT” shop … and some just wanted to make a difference themselves. While we could do some reporting on this we didn’t have a way to actively help solve the problem.
