Spiceworks 4.5 is coming!

Spiceworks 4.5So Spiceworks sent me a “care pack” which basically was (my comments are the non bulleted bits):

    • Use It on Larger, More Complex Networks – With features like scan scheduling for multiple subnets, SSL & HTTPS support with our new Apache web server and an editable network map, Spiceworks 4.5 is built to scale for all types and size of networks.

This is great, a lot of people have not been able to use Spiceworks because of the problem with SSL and HTTPS, now this is built in more people will be able to use Spiceworks on a wider range off networks.

    • Run a More Sophisticated Help Desk – Our users love our Help Desk app and we’ve worked to make it even better with ticket queuing and customized viewing for large teams and remote sites to streamline your support team.

With the new new ticket queuing and customized viewing large and even small teams will be able to streamline the helpdesk. Even as a 1 man band I will find this useful for bumbling up tickets from important people and of course down the ones from the pains… The customized viewing will allow people to keep track of different sets of tickets for either different groups off people or different problem types.

    • Extend What Spiceworks Can Do for You – Manage your company’s PC power consumption (courtesy of Intel), and monitor your SQL servers with new plugins.

Over time Spiceworks has improved the plugin system and 4.5 is no exception, 4.5 now brings a brand new interface for creating plugins that will allow you to have multiple scripts and even files on a plugin, this will make plugins much more powerful

    • Use Spiceworks in Your Local Language – New language packs in Spiceworks 4.5 mean you’ll be able to translate the application into whatever language you prefer. You can even contribute to developing better translations in your selected language.

For a while now Spiceworks has had a Internationalization plugin in which has allowed you to change the language but now 4.5 will have this built. Using the enhanced extension editor making new languages are a doddle. Spiceworks 4.5 will come with English and pig Latin by default.

    • …Plus, Enjoy Better Performance! – Spiceworks 4.5 will run up to 30% faster than previous Spiceworks versions in Internet Explorer (our goal is to make it on par with Spiceworks performance in Firefox) – just another step in our ongoing efforts to improve performance.

So every version of Spiceworks has brought speed improvements and with Spiceworks 4.5 now running on apache and a lot of time gone into cleaning up the code, Spiceworks could not run up to 30% faster than previous versions.

Hmm… Ok so that’s nothing new, I think I mentioned this in Spiceworks 4.5 beta out from when the Beta was first announced. Then again in Spiceworks 4.5 First thoughts a day after using the beta for the first time I put together my first thoughts on each off the new sections.

Something new though is the Spiceworks 4.5 video from Spiceworld2009 “Sneak Peek of Future Features”.

4.5 Video

At Spiceworld2009 the Francis & Greg (two of Spiceworks’ co-founders) did a nice half hour talk about the up coming version and the exciting features that Spiceworks are planning and working on.

If you have the time I suggest watching. It was great to watch
