Spiceworks Storage Advisor Plugin sponsored by EMC

Spiceworks have recently released a new plugin Sponsored by EMC it is designed to allow you to:

See how much drive space is in use on any given drive, and the past usage history.  Project your backup needs based on backup schedule and projected drive usage.

Having just installed it on my Spiceworks install it looks promising, showing you how much backup Space you need for 12 months. You pick how many full and incremental backups and also the size of the data increase. If you are finding it hard to work out how much space you are using make sure you check it out.

The story off the Spiceworks SpiceRex

image421 The story off the Spiceworks SpiceRex

So one weekend I enter the Spiceworks “Show the world your Spiceness” contest with some standard things to start with. Just bits and bobs I found around the office like a moose head and a random set of oversized batteries.

After a while I ran out of ideas and wanted to come up with something new and exciting, I started to think back about things I had done and seen before as well as doing a Google of bits and bobs.

Getting creative

I got creative and along came the SpiceVan failing to get peoples avatars into the windows of the bus I just stuck some logos on it.

Not very exciting, and well not as good as I hoped I tried something else.

Coming up for the Spiceworks Community

So I though I would share some cool Spiceworks Community news with you, none of this has a release date yet but from what I have heard it could be before the end off the month.

  • Product Comparison Feature – A while ago Martin9700 wrote a product comparison guide on virtualization this was great but the plan was to make it editable so that over time people would be able to add to it and make it better and more accurate. With one of the upcoming community updates we are going to see this come to life. You will be able to update product comparison guides by adding product information as well as new things to compare. This will hopefully provide a huge database unbiased product comparisons to help you pick the right one, only people over a set SpiceLevel will be able to update them stopping people signing up just to promote there products.
  • In Community Toolbar – Like your Spiceworks application the community will have a Toolbar along the bottom. This will provide you information like new PM’s, community activity, quick links and maybe in the future allow you to add favourite pages to pop back to.
  • Possible “fluid layout” – Now this hasn’t been confirmed or denied yet but with the deployment of fluid layout / widescreen by default in Spiceworks and the new toolbar it appears it could be rolled out to the community as well to provide you more space to work with.
  • Chat – The IRC chat has been a great hit with lots of “off topic” talk and is a great laugh, Nic the community manager is still collecting the stats and working out if this will be a permanent feature on the community and how it will be managed, make sure you leave your feedback.

As always Unofficial Spiceworks will keep you in the loop with what happens and any more news as we get it.
