SpiceRex to travel the world

image468 SpiceRex to travel the worldSpiceworks SpiceHeads are queuing up to host SpiceRex with approximately 35 people signed up ready and willing to host him.

SpiceRex started off with me (akp982) in Marlow to then be sent onto Spiceworks HQ with Nic (Spiceworks) and the team. He’s currently relaxing in Australia with Lawrie5252, and starting to cast his eye around for where to go next.

SpiceHeads will get to host him for around a week before sending him on taking pictures of cool places near them and when you host SpiceRex you will end up with a cool badge for your community profile. 1mbadgespicerex SpiceRex to travel the world

If you want to host him checkout this thread on the community. Make sure you don’t miss the change to spend time with the Spiciest T-Rex around!

Why are community members called SpiceHeads?

geek Why are community members called SpiceHeads? So this question was recently posed to me and so I decided to dig up the reason behind it then share it with everyone.

akp982 (Andy) was bought up by SpiceRex many years ago, it was then he learned the true meaning of spice and began his journey. SpiceRex sent him to earth as a guardian to serve and protect the newly created Spiceworks Community. Along this journey Andy and his chief advisor SAM (Scott) made selected people SpiceHeads to help him in his quest, this is their story…

Ok so it didn’t really start of like that.

It all started back in 2008 with the first Annual User Conference or SpiceWorld (as most of us know it) during the happy hour some of the users/attendees got chatting to a couple of the Spiceworks guys Frances and Greg about Spiceworks and the community and came with the idea of that community members should have name. The next day the guys started chatting about “Memories of SpiceWorld 2008” and up came the subject of having a name for members again.

MyShell (who has now unfortunately left Spiceworks) quickly created a SpiceList entitled “Best Name For Spiceworks Users”, some great ideas like “Spicers” and “Spiceheads” started to come up but there was one strong standing name from the start “Spice Heads”. It quickly took the top spot and well now has over double the votes compared to any of the others.

As with most things Spiceworks like SpiceWorld or SpiceCorps the space was dropped and SpiceHeads was born.

And that’s how it started…

This is yet another thing started by the community, “Of the Users. For the Users. By the Users!”

A number of the things you see around Spiceworks and the community are ideas thought up by SpiceHeads then grasped with both hands by Spiceworks and developed. From the idea of product comparison tables to SpiceLists and of course the latest invention SpiceRex. You can always get involved with the new features in Spiceworks by joining the beta groups or checking out the feature request section.

So I guess the real question is if we are SpiceHeads, what are the Spiceworks Employees? SpiceStaff, SpiceGirls or something else?

Post your ideas and vote on the community SpiceList “Best Name For Spiceworks Employees

SpiceRex enjoying the Autum Sun in AU

SpiceRex is still on his travels, this time he’s made it to Australia and the home of Lawrie5252

image thumb149 SpiceRex enjoying the Autum Sun in AUWell, we’re happy to report that SpiceRex has landed in Australia.

He is pictured below streaching his legs after a long flight and apparently looking for some marsupials to eat. He’d apparently heard they were quite yummy and pretty easy to catch.

He also wanted me to thank the friendly folk at Spiceworks HQ for helping him with the airfare, but says next time he crosses the Pacific he wants first class.

Stay tuned for more news about his visit down-under, photos and videos.

April Community Release

So what’s coming up in this months community release?

Well:

  • Upgrade to CKEditor – This will allow better editing of posts and hopefully spealing features. Yes that was intentional.

  • Mark PMs as read/unread – To go along with the above you will be able to mark PM’s read/unread so you can track which ones you still need to action or look at after reading.
  • Group Admin email improvements – If you are a Group Admin you currently get a email which shows you the activity in the groups you admin, this month will see some improvements on this.
  • Product Comparison chart v2 – The production comparison charts have many new and updated features in version 2.

Looking at the Spiceworks Product Comparison Beta

image433 Looking at the Spiceworks Product Comparison Beta So following a recent post by Nic, Spiceworks have implemented a new feature to help you compare products quickly and independently.

The feature was inspired by Martin9700‘s Virtualization comparison chart.

We created the ability to create and edit similar tables for other products or services:

http://community.spiceworks.com/comparison_table/show/3

In the next version, everyone will be able to edit these just like a Wiki. For now, only Group Admins can edit tables that we setup.

This new feature could be really key to helping IT Pro’s like you picking the right products first time and quickly.

So what does it look like?

You can check it out for yourself here or see below, it basically looks like a table.

Over time these product comparison tables will grow and become unbiased sources of information.
