So the 4.6 release of Spiceworks has been pinned for around Mid to late March and Unofficial Spiceworks has managed to get a Unofficial List of some new features and changes.
Helpdesk Notifications – One thing people have wanted is to be notified when a ticket is assigned, so from 4.6 you will have the option to set a notification for notifies all admins when a ticket is assigned, so that they know a new ticket has been assigned.
Helpdesk UI – The helpdesk UI will now allow you to resize the helpdesk view to show more tickets, and customize the view a bit more including we believe showing different fields on the main page.
Notification Toolbar – The toolbar along the bottom will now show more information, such as your community inbox status and updates
Network Map discovery – Spiceworks have been hard at work increasing the range of SNMP device discovery
Loads of bug fixes – With every release Spiceworks will fix loads of bugs and 4.6 is no different.
Now on with the story. For his birthday ObieOne has released version 2.3 of the much loved and used Spiceworks MobileHelpdesk.
The mobile helpdesk allows you to view, edit and update tickets on nearly every mobile device from iPhone, Windows Mobile or BlackBerry. There have also been reports of it working on some nokia’s.
MobileHelpdesk uses Tickets Anywhere to allow you to remotely update your tickets as if you were at your desk, allowing you to quickly resolve problems on the go. Its simple to install and setup using .NET, IIS and a SQLite connector. Its easy to setup, and once ready you just surf to the website you setup, login and away you go.
So far ObieOne is very pleased with all the feedback he’s getting and he sure hope people will enjoy it.

Just to show how Spiceworks are always working to improve the product.
The fourth build of the Spiceworks 4.5 beta is now available for you to try out. Testing and feedback from you is an integral part of every release cycle and we appreciate the time and effort you put into giving us the feedback. In addition, you’ll be sure that the final release is a seamless upgrade for you.
So Spiceworks sent me a “care pack” which basically was (my comments are the non bulleted bits):
Use It on Larger, More Complex Networks – With features like scan scheduling for multiple subnets, SSL & HTTPS support with our new Apache web server and an editable network map, Spiceworks 4.5 is built to scale for all types and size of networks.
This is great, a lot of people have not been able to use Spiceworks because of the problem with SSL and HTTPS, now this is built in more people will be able to use Spiceworks on a wider range off networks.
Run a More Sophisticated Help Desk – Our users love our Help Desk app and we’ve worked to make it even better with ticket queuing and customized viewing for large teams and remote sites to streamline your support team.
With the new new ticket queuing and customized viewing large and even small teams will be able to streamline the helpdesk. Even as a 1 man band I will find this useful for bumbling up tickets from important people and of course down the ones from the pains… The customized viewing will allow people to keep track of different sets of tickets for either different groups off people or different problem types.
Extend What Spiceworks Can Do for You – Manage your company’s PC power consumption (courtesy of Intel), and monitor your SQL servers with new plugins.
Over time Spiceworks has improved the plugin system and 4.5 is no exception, 4.5 now brings a brand new interface for creating plugins that will allow you to have multiple scripts and even files on a plugin, this will make plugins much more powerful
Use Spiceworks in Your Local Language – New language packs in Spiceworks 4.5 mean you’ll be able to translate the application into whatever language you prefer. You can even contribute to developing better translations in your selected language.
For a while now Spiceworks has had a Internationalization plugin in which has allowed you to change the language but now 4.5 will have this built. Using the enhanced extension editor making new languages are a doddle. Spiceworks 4.5 will come with English and pig Latin by default.
…Plus, Enjoy Better Performance! – Spiceworks 4.5 will run up to 30% faster than previous Spiceworks versions in Internet Explorer (our goal is to make it on par with Spiceworks performance in Firefox) – just another step in our ongoing efforts to improve performance.
So every version of Spiceworks has brought speed improvements and with Spiceworks 4.5 now running on apache and a lot of time gone into cleaning up the code, Spiceworks could not run up to 30% faster than previous versions.
Hmm… Ok so that’s nothing new, I think I mentioned this in Spiceworks 4.5 beta out from when the Beta was first announced. Then again in Spiceworks 4.5 First thoughts a day after using the beta for the first time I put together my first thoughts on each off the new sections.
Something new though is the Spiceworks 4.5 video from Spiceworld2009 “Sneak Peek of Future Features”.
4.5 Video
At Spiceworld2009 the Francis & Greg (two of Spiceworks’ co-founders) did a nice half hour talk about the up coming version and the exciting features that Spiceworks are planning and working on.
If you have the time I suggest watching. It was great to watch

Yes ok this post isn’t the best but I ran out off ideas

So I (akp982) have been using the Spiceworks 4.5 beta on my laptop since it came out yesterday. The install seemed to take longer than before but it does now install Apache as the web server this gives improved speed and reliability, see what I think about the rest below.
Help Desk Queuing (Rules and View)
Being able to route incoming tickets to the right person or giving it the right due date to start with is always important. With Spiceworks 4.5 you are able to use Tickets anywhere to update tickets as they come in. I think this will be a great help for when you have a user you don’t want to help, set the checks for the user and then close the ticket before you even see it. I don’t think that’s what its meant for but hay I’m sure ALL IT guys have someone like that, one use would be the opposite, when from management it gets bumped up to the top so you see and do it first. Either way it seems to work well and will be really useful to everyone from 1 man bands to 10 man teams.
Spiceworks 4.5 appears to have fixed loads of the smaller bugs in the network map and has now picked up my devices at home and work and put them in the right place first time. It seems to work a lot smoother and with the speed inprovments by using the Apache server the network map seems to load faster.
Spiceworks Extension Framework
Ohh… My… God this rocks. You can now manage and edit your plug-ins a lot quicker and easier. The new editor is more stable and easier to use compared to the old one with even a function to check your plugin will work.
Apache WebServer
The new Apache takes a bit longer to install but once installed Spiceworks FLY’s. This is shown very quickly by how fast the dashboard full of the default gadgets load on a bog standard win 7 laptop with 15 other things open while I’m trying to work from home.
Performance
Speed improvements haven’t just come from the new web server. There have also been a lot of code changes to optimise how Spiceworks works and loads. All of this just makes the whole thing nicer. No mater how many windows you open at the same time there are no speed issues.
Localization
To help Spiceworks spread around the world they have now implemented a localization area in which allows you to download languages and translate the whole of Spiceworks not just the portal as before. A bit improvement and the pig Latin version rocks (there is a image in the gallery below)
