image327 A conversation with a Spiceworks Community Member Dmitriy BeerHow did you get into IT? How long have you been at it?

As with the most of fellow IT Pros, it’s the usual story of being interested in computers since the very early age. The story is slightly different in the fact that I am Russian born and historically the Eastern block was always poorer hence there was no way an average family could afford a computer at the time. Luckily at my mom’s workplace they were quite progressive, so I could get my hands on a couple of them when she was staying late at work.

Fluid Layout (Widescreen) in Spiceworks

Something apparently not a lot of people know about is that in Spiceworks you can “Enable experimental fluid layout” this gives you a lot more room to work with in tickets the helpdesk and the inventory.

Read more below the images.

I use it all the time and there are some problems with some widgets where things are not able to stretch or just look funny. Most things how ever work perfectly, the network map, user portal editor, IT services, monitors and alerts and of course the inventory.

So how do you enable this?

  • Settings
  • Advanced & International Options
  • Show pro settings (at the bottom)
  • And the last one “Enable experimental fluid layout” set it to true

IE8 out performs FF 3.5 in Spiceworks 4.5!

browserperfchart IE8 out performs FF 3.5 in Spiceworks 4.5!

According to one of the latest news articles from Spiceworks IE8 now out performs FireFox 3.5!

Its great to see speed improvements in Spiceworks but I was personally shocked by this one. It appears Spiceworks works faster in IE8 than it does Firefox, of course IE7 is still way behind.

Who knows how they fully managed it, could it be that the IE version has less functionality? It definitely doesn’t look as pretty, the corners in IE8 are square were Firefox they are rounded.

I certainly prefer the look and feel of it in Firefox.

So considering Firefox renders these nice corners I can allow for that small speed bump.
