The second build of the Spiceworks 4.0 beta is now available for you to try out. Testing and feedback from you is an integral part of every release cycle and we appreciate the time and effort you put into giving us the feedback. In addition, you’ll be sure that the final release is a seamless upgrade for you.

This version brings many bug fixes over 850 at the last count (ok why they had 850 buts well never know…) but it also brings…

Network map the default view is the hotspot view which shows you just the network infrastructure.
User Portal
- Added the ability to create knowledge articles
- Changes to how you can edit the portal layout and themes
The helpdesk has support for Exchange 2007 for email
SSH discovery issues for Mac OS X have been fixed
OS and Software name normalization. We’ve adjusted the collation of os and software names so it’s easier to group them together. For example when you had international OSs involved Spiceworks assumed there were different from Windows XP. The normalization will help group software and OS’s together. However if you have any reports that explicitly relied on the name of the software you may have to edit the reports to account for the new name.

We strongly caution you against using the beta in production. If you hit a serious bug you may have to start from scratch!

Spiceworks have just dropped a huge hint they are planning on getting Spiceworks out off beta within the next month.

The release of Spiceworks 4.0 will be HUGE, with major new features and huge bug fixes including Speed it will knock your socks off.

Notes about web browser support:

Spiceworks no longer supports Internet Explorer 6.0 (IE6) in the application. Read more.

The existing end-user portal still supports IE6 and IE7, but not IE8
The new end-user portal supports IE6, 7 & 8

Spiceworks 4.0 no longer to Support ie6

Can you believe it IE6 is still being used in the wide world of the tinternet?

A while ago Spiceworks announced in 4.0 they will no longer support IE6 yay.

Internet Explorer 6 has caused so many issues for web developers around the world, with limited support for new “web 2.0” features such as transparent png’s or being able to use div’s fully.

No longer supporting ie6 means that Spiceworks can grow in a way it was unable to before, increasing the speed and looks.

So what does this mean for the normal user?

Most IT pro’s know what IE6 is and even what IE8 is now so should already be running 7 or a better browser like FireFox or google chrome. Unforuntantely if you are using IE6 you will need to upgrade or change your broswer.
