SpiceWorks Network Management Tool

From October 2007:

Anyone who has had to administer a network of users, hardware, and software knows the headache it can become. If your infrastructure, and the administration of that infrastructure, isn’t set up well, you can be in for a nightmare. Well, I came across SpiceWorks network management tool probably six months ago and have just now gotten around to installing it. And I’ve been pleasantly surprised by it on numerous fronts.

Spiceworks relies on ads to offer IT management software

From August 2007

Advertising-supported Web sites serving consumers like you and me may be all the rage.

But rarely have other Web sites, those serving companies, tried to rely on ads — because there’s not enough people to look at the ads.

But Spiceworks, an Austin, Texas company, has raised $8 million more in venture capital to deliver on its model of serving ads to on its site that offers software to manage the information technology assets of medium sized companies.

Spiceworks – network management software for free

Another post from August 2007

I’ve recently been tinkering with a piece of network management software called Spiceworks. It’s a comprehensive tool with a web interface that helps IT staff manage networks for SMBs with up to 250 devices. It includes monitoring devices, hardware/software inventory listing, alerts, reporting and a help-desk feature to track end-user issues. To top it all off Spiceworks is free.

spicewx thumb Some Old Posts I found some old posts about Spiceworks to share:

The Scrappy Software Marketer

This one is from August 2007:

What the real story is that Spiceworks offers an IT Desktop suite that is completely free and ad supported. Basically, as people use the software they are served up ads via a sidebar using AdSense.

My take….so long as the software does what it says it will do and provides value to an organization, then why the hell not? I wish Spiceworks all the best. Must be fun to work in their marketing department…cause the main goal is to seed and infiltrate the market with free software.

Ages ago, like the 4 march 2007 FUCC reviewed Spiceworks quickly and effectively.

The Back Room Tech

Today I finally got around to installing spiceworks. The spiceworks.com web site claims the software is an IT manager’s dream – asset management and help desk, all from a simple Windows PC.

The installation took all of five minutes to complete. I think the most difficult part of the install was figuring out if my machine was already running a web server, or if spiceworks could use the default port 80.

You want network management software that works for you, not software that makes you work. You wish you could have it… without spending a fortune. Your wish is granted.

Spiceworks a replacement for HP insights?

spiceworks Spiceworks a replacement for HP insights?

zxzconsulting wrote a nice and short review of what they think about Spiceworks.

I’ve been experimenting with Spiceworks recently, as an addition or potential replacement for HP Systems Insight Manager.  For a free product it’s awesome.  It scans the network for devices and you can allocate them to Workstations, Servers, Printes etc.   The great thing that sits alongside the product is the community.  There are over 400,000 IT professionals worldwide using Spiceworks, and their experiences with harware, software, and vendors is there for the taking.

More talk about a Spiceworks API

SWNews have found out some more news about a Spiceworks API…

Jay Hallberg VP of marketing and co-founder of Spiceworks has been reported to say: “We work with them to create self-contained applications they can plug into the Spiceworks interface to perform functions for users,”

Currently working with Microsoft, TrendMicro and CDW, Spiceworks 4.0 is said to include new app’s or plugins for things like a widget for Microsoft that lets IT managers manage their software licenses, LiveOffice archive management and CDW purchase management.

But Spiceworks may charge for these: “Hallberg says that Spiceworks is testing the program with four initial sponsors to glean best practices. Pricing varies and generally is part of larger marketing budgets, he says.”

Blog Posts about Spiceworks

Following on from the old blog posts from 2007 we have listed we have also found some slightly newer ones to share:

redferret.net

Spiceworks is a freeware network management software package which is designed for geek professionals rather than Posh, Baby, Scary and Ginger. It’s free because the program beams ads at geeks, and judging by the user base of 400,000 it’s pretty successful.

In addition, Spiceworks announced it has doubled the number of advertisers running campaigns to its growing community of IT professionals.

stapler

Spiceworks is a free network monitoring utility that I have started using one of my client’s networks. Spiceworks makes the software free by selling adds withing the application. The adds aren’t intrusive and I may find them useful at some point as they seam to be good companies and very relevant. There is a paid version if you don’t wish to see the adds.
